Education in Bayside
The neighborhood is part of District 26 of the New York City Department of Education. There are 20 elementary schools, five middle schools, and two high schools.
There is also a local community college, Queensborough Community College, in Bayside. The university is part of the City University of New York system and is located on the former site of the Oakland Golf Club.
52% of Bayside residents age 25 and older have a college degree. 95% of Bayside students graduate on time, which is 20 points higher than the city-wide average of 75%. Their rate of school-age child absenteeism is also significantly lower than the rest of the city.

Local Landmarks in Bayside
There are several notable local landmarks in Bayside:
1. 35-25 223rd St. The home at this address was once home to American comedian W.C. Fields.
2. 38-39 214th Place. This house belonged to noted author Charles Johnson Post. His book The Little War of Private Post was a popular recollection of the Spanish-American War of 1898.
3. All Saints Episcopal Church. The church was built in 1892. It is one of the first churches constructed in the neighborhood.
4. Authors House. This home located at the dual address of 214-30 46th Avenue and 46-02 215th Street has hosted more published authors than any other residence in the neighborhood.
5. Cornell-Appleton House. A grand twelve-story dwelling that is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Bayside, dating back to 1852. It was once owned by Appleton Publishing Company founder Edward Dale Appleton. His wife and sister were survivors of the infamous Titanic sinking.
6. Corbett House. Located at 221-04, the house was home to prize fighter “Gentleman Jim” Corbett and his family until 1959.
7. Fort Totten. The historic fort was built in 1862 to help guard the northern entrance of New York. It remains a popular Civil War attraction. Most of the fort has been converted into a public park, with daily tours offered.

8. Rudolph Valentino’s home. This building located at 201-10 Cross Island Parkway was once home to the famed Italian actor. It was also once home to former New York mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. The building was renovated and converted into a multi-story restaurant called Tavern on the Green in 1993. The restaurant gained quite a bit of notoriety, but not all of it was good. It was eventually shut down in 2009 by the New York City Parks Department. The business’ former managers were removed from their ownership positions following accusations of mismanaged finances and connections with the local mob. The restaurant reopened as Valentino’s on the Green a year later.
The area is known as one of the healthiest neighborhoods in New York. There are typically fewer pollutants, pre-term and teenage births and people with serious health conditions. One reason why its viewed that their citizens are living healthier, happier lives is that many of them eat vegetables and fruits every day. Most of these items are purchased at local markets or bodegas. Over 85 percent of Bayside’s adult residents report their health as good, very good or excellent, which is almost ten points higher than the city average.
